Early childhood education is a branch of education theory that relates to the teaching of children from birth up to the age of eight. Traditionally, this is up to the equivalent of third grade. Early Childhood Education is described as an important period in child development.

Aims
This diploma aims at equipping both preservice and in-service teachers in early childhood education settings with the core competencies outlined by the Sri Lankan National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Standards for Preschool Teachers levels 3 and 4 which covers the foundational knowledge, skills and competencies required to teach in an early child education setting in Sri Lanka and/or abroad. Although this program follows the general guidelines and requirements of the Sri Lankan government regarding preschool teacher training, students are equipped with knowledge on the latest advancements in the field of early childhood development and education internationally so they have the confidence to seek employment in an early childhood educational setting locally or in any part of the world.
Programme Learning Outcomes
At the end of the program, the students will be able to:
Acquire the knowledge and skills to create and apply early childhood principlesand practices to stimulate and sharpen social interaction, emotional, cognitive psychomotor, language and creativity development
Demonstrate the confidence to facilitate the learning process of young learners between the ages of 2 ½-5 years in an early childhood educational setting.
Design age-appropriate activities, prepare suitable learning materials and teaching aids for the optimum stimulation and all-round development of the early learner.
Identify and understand the unique developmental and psychological needs of the early learner, managing each child according to his/her unique needs and providing the right educational experiences to draw out and enhance eachchild’s innate potential.
Eligibility Requirements
No prior knowledge is required. Applicants should normally be at least 16 years old and preferably with the following:
Level 3 certificate holders with Early Childhood qualification or Early Childhood teaching or caring experience and
Applicants 16 years old and above and with zero Levels or work experience in similar fields.
Applicants 16 years old and above without any early childhood academic qualification but with at least a minimum of 2 years of relevant working experience in early childhood teaching experience.
